We celebrate our achievements at Worlds

On Sunday, October 13th 2024, we celebrated with a party to honor the achievements of our athletes at the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships.

The party featured honored guests from local governments, parents of athletes, students of our school, and of course the 10 National Team athletes that competed at Worlds in Brunei. There was a short demonstration, a speech from Master Li, and plenty of food and fun.

Champions at the 2024 World Junior Wushu Championships

Congratulations to the success of all 14 athletes from Team Canada, including 10 from Wayland Li Wushu, that participated in the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships!

Key achievements:

  • 10 athletes from Wayland Li represented Canada on the National Wushu Team in taolu competition

  • Gold medal 🥇in Group B Gunshu for Lia Tang-Ruggiero

  • Gold medal 🥇in Group B Daoshu for Lia Tang-Ruggiero

  • Gold medal 🥇in Group C Daoshu for Ryan Gao

  • Silver medal 🥈in Group C Daoshu for Thea Dong

  • Bronze medal 🥉 in Group C Qiangshu for Eason Gao

  • Bronze medal 🥉in Group A Qiangshu for Chris Gao

  • Venus Li, Marcus Li, Amanda Sun, Allen Liu and Kai-Hsin Chang finishing with top 10 or better placements in their respective divisions

  • With 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, there was the strongest showing for Team Canada ever in a single competition event. Canada placed 8th overall!

Congratulations to all of national team athletes from across Canada, including Junchen Yang, Virigina Cai, Melissa Hai and Julianna Huang. It was a blast to be on this journey together!

The championships were held in Brunei from September 22 - 29, 2024.

And a special congratulations to Shifu Wenqi Li and Coach Erica Li for your hard work and perserverance in coaching so many athletes.

Congrats on results at 2024 Pan-Am Wushu Championships

Congratulates to all Canadian athletes that competed in the 2024 Pan-American Wushu Championships! 

Dates: August 29th - September 2, 2024

Location: Santa Clara, California, United States

Key Achievements:

  • Nearly 60 members of the Canadian Wushu National Team competed in the championships, representing Canada among more than 1,000 athletes from 12 countries participating in the games

  • Wayland Li athletes won a total of 21 🥇gold medals, 19 🥈silver medals and 10 🥉bronze medals

  • Congratulations everyone on your hard work and amazing achievements!

Champions at the 2024 Canadian National Selection event!

Congratulates to all 30 athletes from Wayland Li that competed in the 2024 Canadian Nationals!

  • 10 athletes from Wayland Li selected to represent Canada on our Junior National Wushu team at the 9th World Junior Wushu Championships in Brunei. Congratulations to:

  • 6 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals for Group C athletes Thea, Clara, Ryan and Eason

  • 6 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze for Senior athletes Erica, Rex, Caleb and Antigone

  • 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and many top 5 finishes for Open Recreational athletes Ashany, Madison, Ella, Louise, Jacob, Lucas and Tommy.

  • Rex Lam was the 2024 Canadian National Champion for senior male athletes, and Erica Li was the 2024 Canadian National Champion for senior female athletes

  • Open recreational events: 8 students participated in competition for the first time, taking home many gold, silver and bronze medals.

Upcoming Wushu Championships - let's go!

This fall brings plenty of national and international Wushu competitions.

We thrilled to be competing at the Canadian National Championships this coming weekend, and then at PanAm Wushu Championships later in August (Santa Clara, California).

Our athletes have been training hard under the guidance of Master Li. We hope to make the Canadian National Team and compete at this year’s 9th World Junior Wushu Championships being held in Brunei.

Champions at the 2024 PanAm Selection Event!

Congratulations to the success of all 44 athletes from Wayland Li Wushu that competed in the 2024 Ontario Martial Arts Games and Selection Event!

Key achievements:

  • 44 athletes in high performance Wushu divisions with stellar results: 41 gold medals 🥇, 28 silver medals 🥈, and 12 bronze medals 🥉

  • Optional Division: 9 gold medals 🥇, 4 silver medals 🥈. Athletes that qualified for PanAm Games include Erica, Rex, Caleb and Tiggy.

  • Group A: 8 gold medals 🥇, 9 silver medals 🥈, and 1 bronze medal 🥉. Athletes that qualified for PanAm Games include Amanda, Chloe, Ellie, Kai-Hsin, Chris and Allen.

  • Group B: 14 gold medals 🥇, 8 silver medals 🥈, and 7 bronze medal 🥉. Athletes that qualified for PanAm Games include Lia, Venus, Roberta, Cindy, Marcus, Lucas, Timmy, Johnny and Robert.

  • Group C: 10 gold medals 🥇, 7 silver medals 🥈, and 4 bronze medal 🥉. Athletes that qualified for PanAm Games include Thea, Brianna, Clara, Khloe, Avery, Ryan, Eason and Jiahao.

Congrats to our Athletes on Your Wushu Canada Awards!

Congratulations to Lia and Amanda!

On March 17, 2024, Wushu Canada — together with the City of Markham — recognized two Wushu Canada athletes from Wayland Li Wushu for their accomplishments in the sport.

  • Lia Tang-Ruggiero was recognized as “Most promising Wushu Taolu Athlete of the Year 2023”

  • Amanda Sun was recognized as “Wushu Taolu Rising Star of the Year 2023”

In 2022, at the 8th World Junior Wushu Championships, Lia won gold for Group B Gunshu, silver for Group B Changquan and bronze for Group B Daoshu. Amanda placed 5th in Group B Jianshu and 6th in Group B Qiangshu.

Thank you to Shifu Li for his diligent coaching througout the years.

Further, thank you to Mr. Sunny Tang, president of Wushu Canada for presenting the award, as well as Rosalynn Kwok for coordinating the awards.

Champions at Ottawa Open Wushu Championship

On March 9th, 2024, we joined our wushu friends in a provincial competition at the 2024 Ottawa Open Wushu Championships.

The event was held in North Gower, Ontario at the Alfred Taylor Recreation Centre.

Our Wayland Li athletes competed along with friends from Sunny Tang, Wushu Ottawa, Maple China Wushu, Quebec Wushu and many other teams.

Congratulations to the success of all 11 athletes from Wayland Li Wushu!
